Freshman Brummett Leads Seminoles To Seventh Place Finish At Furman Tournament

Florida State University freshman Whitney Brummett finished in a tie for fourth in the individual standings to lead the Seminole women’s golf team to a tie for seventh place finish in the team standings as play in the Lady Paladin Invitational came to a conclusion at the Furman University Golf Course. Brummett fired an even par 72 in the third round to earn her first career top-five finish and led the Seminoles to their best finish of the fall season. The Seminoles earned their best team finish of the fall season and finished ahead of 13 teams in the 23-team event.

Furman fired a final-round 292 to hold off fourth-ranked Georgia by one stroke to claim the team title. Furman sophomore Monique Gesualdi won her first collegiate individual title with a three-round 213.

Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) continued her torrid play as she carded an even par 72 for the second consecutive round to finish with a 218 total for the 54-hole event. She finished tied for fourth with a trio of players and only three strokes off the pace set by Gesualdi. Brummett finished a total of two strokes over par for the event with a 218 – her best finish by 11 strokes. Her previous best three-round tournament score was a 229 at the Tar Heel Invitational.

Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.), a second freshman in the Seminoles’ starting lineup, closed the event with a career-low round of 72 and finished in a tie for 38th place in the individual standings with a career-low 225 total. She improved in each round during the event with a 79 in round one, a 74 in round two and a 72 in round three. Wright established career-bests for single-round score (72), 36-hole score (153), three-round event score (225) and finish (tied for 38th). She averaged 75.00 strokes per round in the Lady Paladin; she had averaged 80.33 strokes in the first six rounds of her career.

Sophomore Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) earned the 10th top-50 individual finish of her career as she finished in a tie for 49th place with a 227 total. The 227 total is the best three-round total of her career. Burch was only four stokes over par after the first two rounds of the event with a 36-hole total of 147. Junior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) played her best event of the fall season as she finished with a 229 total for the 54 holes played over the three-day period. She carded identical scores of 75 in the second and third rounds. Larsson’s 229 score is the best of her three-event fall season. Junior Kristin Sordel (Windermere, Fla.) continued her improvement as she finished with a 250 total for the event – her score was 14 strokes better than her finish at the Tar Heel Invitational.

Florida State plays host to the fifth annual Chrysler ACC/SEC Challenge beginning Friday (Oct. 29) on the Raven Course at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The event is the jewel of the Seminoles’ schedule and one of the top events of the year in women’s collegiate golf.
