BOSTON, Mass. – Five Seminole track and field athletes competed over the weekend at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass. Freshman Rafeeq Curry was the top finisher for the Tribe placing fourth in the men’s triple jump competition with a mark of 52′ 7.25″ (16.03m). Tim Rusan, of Team Nike, won the men’s triple jump establishing a mark of 57′ 3″ (17.45m), which currently stands as the top mark of any other American athlete in that event in 2003.
Senior Kim Jones competed in two events over the weekend with her best finish coming in the women’s long jump event. She finished in a tie for sixth after jumping to a mark of 20′ 1″ (6.12m), her second best distance of the season. In the 60m hurdles, Jones finished in 10th place during the preliminary competition coming up just short of qualifying for the final heat. Jones was in some good company in the 60m hurdles finishing behind Olympic medallist Gail Devers, who ended up winning the overall event. During the 60m hurdle preliminaries, Devers broke the United States record, previously held by her at 7.78, in a time of 7.74.
Florida State also registered three athletes in the shot put competition. For the men, freshman Garrett Johnson was the top finisher placing 8th. His throw of 63′ 2.25″ (19.26m) was a season best and in the process set a new Florida State men’s indoor record in the shot put event. Fellow teammate Dorian Scott placed 9th after establishing his best throw of the day at 60′ 10.75″ (18.56m). On the women’s side, senior Cerenity Young finished in 8th place with her mark of 50′ 7.5″ (15.43m).
Former Seminole grad and the 2002 NCAA women’s triple jump national champion, Teresa Bundy gained a spot on the United States team in the triple jump competition. Her mark of 44′ 11″ in the event was good for a second place finish and a qualifying spot for the World Indoor Championships to be held March 14-16 in Birmingham, England.
The Seminole indoor track and field team will have one more opportunity to gain bids to the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Cyclone Last Chance meet in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, March 8th.
