TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – Following the Seminole Classic this weekend, freshman Ashley Stager was named the ACC Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday, Feb, 18. Stager is the first Seminole to be honored as the 2008 softball season gets rolling.
“It’s very exciting for Ashley to be honored so early in the season,” Seminole head coach JoAnne Graf said. “We are very happy to see the progress she is making with her plays and look forward to her development this season.”
Stager has started all nine games so far this season at shortstop for Florida State. In the first game of the week against Florida A&M she pounded two hits, one of which was her first triple, scoring four runs while driving in two. She also recorded her first steal against the Rattlers in the 9-1 victory on Feb. 13.
In the 14-3 win over Bethune-Cookman on day two of the Seminole Classic, Stager notched two runs on two hits and a team-high five RBI’s. Overall, the newcomer recorded hits in four of five games during the week, piling up four extra-base hits, five runs scored, nine RBIs and two walks.
With her success over the week, Stager is now second on the Seminole squad with a stellar .407 average as she leads her team in doubles and triples with three apiece and in slugging percentage with .741.
Next up for Florida State is the first official road doubleheader against Jacksonville tomorrow, Feb. 19. The Seminoles, who dropped a 5-2 decision to the Dolphins over the weekend, will jumpstart conference play as they host North Carolina this weekend, Feb. 23 and 24, on JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex.
