Freshman Smith Leads Seminole Men’s Golf Team Into 6th Place at Tournament of Champions

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –
Florida State freshman Nicholas Smith is in a tied for ninth place in the individual standings and the Seminole men’s golf team is tied for sixth in the team standings after two rounds of the Tennessee Tournament of Champions at the Holston Hills Country Club. Smith shot a three-under par 68 in the first round and followed that with an even par 71 in the second round for a 139 total for the first 36 holes. He begins play in Tuesday’s third and final round only six strokes off the pace set by Tennessee’s Lloyd Campbell.

Tennessee shot a tournament record 268 in the first round and holds an 18 stroke lead over Alabama after two rounds in the team competition. The Vols 546 two-round total is also a tournament record. Campbell leads the event after two rounds with a nine-under-par 133.

Smith (Belleview, Fla.), a freshman who helped the United States to the Junior World Cup Championship this past summer, leads the Seminoles and is bidding for his first top-10 finish in his first collegiate start. Their were only eight single round scores better than Smith’s during the first two rounds of the event.

Fellow freshman Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) is also in position for a strong finish with a 142 total and a tied for 18th individual placing after the first 36 holes of the event. He shot a one-under par 70 in the first round and a one-over par 72 in the second round. In a tie for 18th place, he begins the final 18 holes only three strokes out of the top 10 and only six strokes out of the top five.

Sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Finland) leads a trio of returning golfers for the Seminoles as he shot a two-over par 142 during the first two rounds. He shot an even par score of 71 in the second round. Blixt is in a tie for 33rd place. He is followed closely by junior Torstein Naevestad (Olso, Norway) and sophomore Song Jeon (Seoul, South Korea) who is tied for 53rd in the individual standings. Jeon closed the day with an even par 71 in the second round.

A shotgun start at 8:30 p.m. CDT is where Florida State begins the third and final round of the event. This is the first event of the fall season for the Seminoles.
