Athens, Ga. – Freshmen Katie Rybakova and Federica Suess continued to build on their stellar starts for the Florida State women’s tennis team as both advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Southern Regionals today, Oct. 20. Rybakova upset the tournament’s No. 8 seed, Georgia Tech’s Whitney McCray, 7-5, 6-4 in the first singles match of the morning to get things off to a good start for the Seminoles.
“It was great to see both of our freshmen step up and advance to the in their respective draws,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “For Katie to step up and take care of business against a very established, highly ranked collegiate player says a lot about Katie. She stayed very competitive and put herself in a position to win today and she did a great job. Federica also had a good first round match, she had to play well to win and she did a great job of hanging in there and I’m looking forward to seeing her continue her success.”
Suess, the No. 1 seed in the singles “B” draw, defeated Babette Lombardo of Jackson State University to advance. Both freshmen will play in the singles round of 16 tomorrow afternoon.
Doubles begin tomorrow morning with all of Florida State’s pairings facing off in the Doubles “A” Draw starting at 8:00 am.
