PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College baseball team, fresh off their BIG EAST Championship victory against St. John’s on Sunday, found out they will be heading to Florida for the 1999 NCAA Baseball Championships.
The Friars were assigned as the #2-seed in the Tallahassee, Florida Regional that will be held at Dick Howser Stadium on the campus of Florida State University from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, May 30th.
The host team Seminoles are the #2-seed in the entire double elimination national tournament and come into this regional with a record of 48-12. They will host, the #4-seed in the regional, The Citadel Bulldogs (41-18).
Providence College (47-14) will face Jacksonville University Dolphins (40-21), the winners of the Trans American Conference in the first game of the tournament on May 28th at 3:00 p.m. The Florida State-Citadel game will be played at 7:00 p.m.
Three games will be played on Saturday with starting times of 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The championship round on Sunday will have game times of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. (if necessary).
The winners of this regional will move on to the Super Regional on June 4-5-6 versus the winner of the Auburn, Alabama Regional that features Tulane, Auburn, North Carolina State and Winthrop.
Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament by winning the BIG EAST Tournament on May 23rd at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey. Behind the seven-hit pitching of the tourney’s Most Outstanding Player, senior righthander Marc DesRoches, the Friars defeated the Red Storm, 6-1.
Mike O’Keefe and Dan Conway paced the PC attack with a pair of RBI’s each. The Friars have recorded a school record 47 wins this season.
