GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Top-ranked Florida State scored eight runs in the second inning to roll to a 15-6 win over No. 20 Florida in front of 5,613 fans at McKethan Stadium. Florida State improved to 8-2, while Florida dropped to 5-4.
Jon McDonald (3-0) got the win for the Seminoles, allowing all six UF runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings. Daniel Higes and Nick Whidden combined to hold UF in check over the final 3.1 innings.
Ryan Barthelemy and Brett Groves each hit grand slams on the afternoon. Barthelemy’s blast highlighted an eight-run second inning. The Seminoles also scored seven runs in the fourth inning with the aid of Groves’ grand slam home run off reliever Stuart McFarland.
Sophomore Alex Hart (0-1) took the loss for Florida. He allowed a career-high 10 runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings. Reliever Ken Birch pitched the final five innings for Florida, holding the Seminoles to three scoreless innings.
Kurt Keene and Matt Siegel each had three hits for Florida, while Groves led FSU with three hits and five RBI on the day.
The two teams play the final game of the two-game series Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
