WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest (16-6, 2-2 ACC) ended Florida State’s
(24-3, 3-1 ACC) 18-game winning streak with a 7-1 victory in front of 1,138
at Gene Hooks Stadium this afternoon. WFU snapped a 13-game regular season
losing streak to FSU with the win.
Righthander Scott Siemon (6-1) earned the victory for the Demon Deacons,
allowing just one run on seven hits in seven innings of work.
FSU starter Jon McDonald (6-1) dropped his first decision of the season,
giving up five runs (three earned) over five innings.
Wake Forest took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the
third inning. Jamie Athis doubled to left and moved to third when Scott
Boyd mishandled a Cory Sullivan ground ball to third base. With runners on
the corners, Jason Aquilante picked up the RBI with a single to right.
Sullivan scored the second run (unearned) when Boyd had his second error of
the inning on a throw over to first base. After Danny Borrell’s pop-fly
dropped in behind second base to load the bases, FSU got out of the inning
without further damage on a 6-4-3 double play.
WFU made it 4-0 when Borrell’s double down the left field line scored
Aquilante and Chase Voshell, who had both reached on singles.
The Seminoles got one back in the top of the sixth when Karl Jernigan
doubled to left, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Mike
Futrell’s sacrifice fly to center.
The Demon Deacons got the run back and pushed the lead to 5-1 when Matt
Price scored on a Ryan Barthelemy throwing error in the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Demon Deacons made it 7-1 as they scored
on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.
John-Ford Griffin (3-for-4) and Jernigan (2-for-4) had multi-hit games for
Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start and will be televised by
Sunshine Network. Junior RHP Mike Ziegler (5-0) will start for the
Seminoles and RHP Eric Schmitt (3-0) will start for the Demon Deacons.
