TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State men’s basketball team, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, has been ranked No. 17 nationally in the 2011-12 Blue Ribbon College Basketball Preseason Top 25 as announced by the publication this week. The Seminoles are one of three ACC teams included in the rankings that saw North Carolina earn the No. 1 spot and Duke placed at No. 6.
The Seminoles are scheduled to play three teams in the preseason top 25 (North Carolina, Duke and No. 9 Florida) and could face a fourth (No. 5 Connecticut) in the Battle4Atlantis Tournament in November.
Florida State is a consensus top 25 pick by the many media outlets that have so far this summer and fall picked a pre-season top 25. The Seminoles are ranked 17th by Blue Ribbon, 20th by FoxSports.com; 20th by Rivals.com, 21st by Andy Katz of ESPN.com and 22nd by Athlon Magazine. The Seminoles have also been the overwhelming pick to finish in third place in the ACC alongside North Carolina and Duke.
“We have an experienced group returning – six 6 seniors and five juniors — that we expect to get tremendous leadership from,” said head coach Leonard Hamilton. “I thought that we made progress last year in a lot of different areas and the biggest area that we made the most improvement was just the understanding what we had to do to play at the highest level. I think they have responded in an appropriate manner from the loss to VCU (in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament).
The Seminoles are one of only two teams in the ACC that has finished in the top four of the ACC standings in each of the last three seasons, enters the 2011-12 season looking to play in the NCAA Tournament for the school record fourth consecutive season. The Seminoles advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA Tournament with victories over No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 5 Notre Dame. It marked the Seminoles first trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament since 1993 and the fourth time in school history they had advanced at least as far as the second week of the three week NCAA Tournament.
