TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State closed out its fall baseball season Monday afternoon with a 16-0 victory over the Ontario Blue Jays in a scrimmage played on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.
FSU pounded out 15 hits including five for extra bases, while six Seminole pitchers combined for the nine-hit shutout.
“It’s like I told the guys in the locker room after the game, anytime we see that zero in the last column that’s what this program is about; we are trying to play a game of error free baseball and I was very proud of that fact,” said head coach Mike Martin. “It was good for our guys to play in an environment of a team with a different color uniform. I thought we played a pretty good game today.”
Stephen McGee led all hitters with a four-hit performance as the junior catcher was a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two singles as he drove in three and scored twice. Freshman DJ Stewart, who started in left field, finished with three hits including a two-run triple that highlighted a seven-run first inning for the Seminoles.
Giovanny Alfonzo and John Sansone both tallied two hits apiece and an RBI. Brett Knief hit the only home run of the game as the junior college transfer led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo shot to left. Knief finished 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored.
Scott Sitz set the tone on the hill for the Seminoles with two innings of one-hit baseball to pick up the win. The senior right hander retired the side in order in the first inning and then worked around a one out infield single in the second by striking out the side. Sitz finished with four strikeouts as he did not issue a walk.
The Seminole pitchers finished the game allowing just one extra base hit and two runners to reach third base in the nine-inning victory.
“I thought the pitching was excellent,” said Martin. “We played very strong defense and it was nice atmosphere for our guys.”
“We are getting closer to seeing what our line-up is going to look like,” added Martin. “We don’t exactly have an order at the present time, but I like what I am seeing from this collection of players.”
Florida State will open the 2013 season at home on Friday, February 15 at 4:00 p.m., as the Seminoles will host a three-game series against the University of Rhode Island.
