TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The members of the Florida State men’s tennis team will be split in half this weekend. Beginning Thursday begins the main draws of the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Friday begins the UM Invitational at Miami.
Seniors Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) will compete in the main draw of singles in Tulsa. This is Bowles fourth straight year competing in the prestigious tournament. Mirzadeh is making his second consecutive appearance in the tournament.
“I’m really excited to go out there against the top ten players,” said Mirzadeh. “There are a lot of opportunities out there and it’s a great competition. It’s always good to go out there and play on the line for your school.”
“I expect everyone to have a great attitude and to give it their best, including myself,” said Bowles. “I know Connor and Vahid are really great at doubles and they have great chemistry. I hope to do well in singles and I’m playing really well right now so we’ll see.”
In doubles play, Mirzadeh will team up with sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) in the main draw of doubles. This will be the duos first appearance at the All-American Championships.
Earlier in the week Smith competed in the qualifying singles draw to advance to the main draw. Joey Burkhardt of UNC defeated him in the first round 6-3, 6-4 to dash his hopes. In the qualifying consolation singles bracket, Jeremy Langer of Indiana beat him in a close three set match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (12).
Representing the Seminoles down in Miami will be the rest of the team including junior Owen Long (Tallahassee, Fla.), sophomores Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala), Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas).
