The familiarity of ScottSpeicherTennisCenter proved beneficial for the Seminoles on Friday as the FloridaState women’s tennis team went 4-1 in singles action and two tandems advanced to their respective doubles flight finals during play at the 2005 Seminole Fall Classic.
The tournament will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 12, with doubles beginning at ; two rounds of singles will follow.
FloridaState singles players Suzanna Mansour (Flight 2), Anna Rynarzewska (Flight 4), Tapiwa Marobela (Flight 4) and Alina Mihailescu (Flight 6) all raced away with victories and advanced to the semifinals of their flights.Mansour defeated Zama Mkhize of Florida A&M by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and Marobela routed Vicky Simpson of Houston, 6-0, 6-1.Rynarzewska battled her way through a tiebreaker over Catherine Canady of Stetson 7-6(5), 7-5. Mihailescu had no problem against South CarolinaState‘s Gisel Brito as she claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
FloridaState‘s Whitney Eber came up on the short end of a 6-4, 6-0, contest to Suzanne Jones of Troy.
In Flight 2 doubles action, the Mansour/Rynarzewska tandem won 8-3 in the opening round to Troy‘s Bares/Jones.In the semifinals they defeated the Polarkova/Powell team from Bethune-Cookman, 8-3, to advance to the finals where they will face McCray/Anderson (Georgia Tech) at Saturday.
The Eber/Marobela pair handed Stetson’s Mollman/Lange an 8-4 loss in Flight 3 and moved on to the semifinals to face teammate Mihailescu, who had partnered up with Sonja Nikoliv of Houston.Though unfamiliar to one another, the Mihailescu/Nikoliv tandem found a way to win against Eber/Marobela (8-5) and to Mkhize/Bailey (8-1) of FAMU in the opening round.
On Saturday, Mihailescu/Nikoliv will face the McLoughlin/Reimer team of Houston for the doubles Flight 3 championship.Eber and Marobela will battle the Panton/Cruz pair (SC State) for third-place bragging rights.
