FSU Continues At All-Americans

Oct. 9, 2009

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – There were high hopes for Florida State in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships this week in Tulsa, Okla. However, the Seminoles have gone just 1-5 in main draw singles and doubles so far.

Clint Bowles, a Tampa, Fla., native, went 1-2 in singles out in Tulsa, but played much stronger than that record indicates. His first round match was against No. 10-ranked Saketh Myeni from Alabama. Bowles narrowly lost in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. After winning his first consolation match, he then faced No. 5-ranked Guillermo Gomez from Georgia Tech. Once again, Bowles stood tall in the match but eventually lost 7-6(3), 7-5.

“Clint had a good day today and fought hard,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “He had a good match with Gomez. He was right there to win it, and it was very close. Clint is definitely capable of beating anyone in the country.”

Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.), didn’t quite have the tournament that he had hoped. Facing No. 18-ranked Steve Johnson from USC in the first round, Aubone fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. His consolation draw match, against No. 39-ranked Matt Brooklyn from UCLA, started off better with Aubone taking the first set 6-2. However, Aubone couldn’t hold the lead and dropped the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.), came up just short in their match-up in the main draw of doubles. The pairing of Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini from California proved to be too much for the Seminole duo, as they were defeated 8-6. Aubone and Mirzadeh will play in the consolation round against William and Mary’s Keziel Juneau and Sebastien Vidal on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
