The Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the ACC Championships this weekend in Winston-Salem, NC.
Coming off big finishes in two major meets (Great American Cross Country Festival and NCAA Pre-Nationals), the Noles are looking to stake their place at the top of one of the nation’s most competitive conferences, the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The highest FSU has finished on either side is fifth. This year, the Garnet and Gold is seeded second in the ACC and the NCAA South Region. The FSU women are seeded fifth in the ACCs and second in the NCAA South Region.
The Tribe will face the daunting task of taking on four nationally ranked women’s teams while the men must beat NC State, the conference’s perennial winners.
“We want to be in the top four in one of the best conferences in the nation – that’s our immediate goal on both sides,” said head coach Bob Braman.
“On the men’s side, we have a young team going in with virtually no pressure. The only nationally ranked team in the conference that we haven’t beaten is NC State and with that win, it will help us pick up at large points for national consideration as well as unseating the perennial champion,” said Braman.
“The ladies have had an outstanding season, beating Virginia and Duke for the first time ever this year. Many of the other teams have been in the top ten nationally. It’s a pretty large task to knock off one of those teams but it’s something we’re preparing for,” said Braman.
“As for Vicky, in this race she’s got nothing to lose. Joep has proven himself in track and field. Individually, we’re waiting for him to step up and win that title,” continued the fourth year head cross country coach.
