TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida State University’s cross country team will open the 2001 season at the Appalachian State Invitational on Friday, Aug. 31, in Boone, N.C. Sophomore Amy Pleckaitis won the 5-K women’s meet last season with a time of 18:10 to lead the Lady Seminoles to a fourth-place finish.

The men’s squad placed third overall last year led by junior Nick Stuart who finished fifth with a time of 26:01 over the 8-K course. The Seminoles finished behind eventual Conference-USA champion South Florida and Southern Conference champion Appalachian State.

The Seminoles are coming off an impressive 2000 season where the women finished fifth overall at the NCAA South Regional Championships, marking the highest finish ever for a Lady Seminole team. The men finished ninth as a team at the NCAA South Regional, improving six places from last year’s finish.

The Seminoles will have a break in between meets before returning to action Sept. 22 to host their only home meet of the season at Miccasukee Greenway in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles will participate in the Across the State Relay Sept. 7 where the men’s and women’s team will run across the state of Florida in one day to raise money to be donated to local charities and the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Service.
