FSU Cross Country Teams Finish Season At NCAA Regional Championships

Nov. 11, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Saturday morning Florida State cross country teams competed in the NCAA Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Alabama at the Harry Pritchett Golf Course. This was the final race of the season for both the men’s and women’s teams. The men and women ended the seasons on a high note both placing in the top 10. The Lady Seminoles finished competition Saturday in fifth place, with the men’s team finishing in ninth place.

Saturday morning was a disappointing finish for freshman Amy Plekaitis. Plekaitis, who has led the Lady Seminoles all season, was sick and unable to run her best. Plekaitis finished the race Saturday in 38th place with a time of 22:11. Junior Brooke Bastien finished competition with a time of 21:27 coming in 13th place and first for the Lady Noles. Bastien received all-region honors along with teammate Katie Jeffrey. Jeffrey ran well Saturday morning finishing the race in 15th place with a time of 21:32.

Rounding out the finishers for FSU were Andrea Dulmage (43rd- 22:20), Cynthia Campbell (44th- 22:22), Kim Winn (63rd- 22:57), and Beth Lukens (69th- 23:07).

“It has been a fantastic year for the women’s program,” said head coach Bob Braman. “Certainly it was disappointing to not qualify for nationals, but it was the highest ever finish for the team at the NCAA South Region Championships. Unfortunately, our team leader, freshman Amy Plekaitis, an all-ACC performer, was sick and did not run well. If you plug her into the score at the predicted fifth or higher finish, then we are on the plane to the national championships. Brooke Bastien and Katie Jeffrey both earned all-region honors and they will both be back next year.”

On the men’s side it was another disappointment due to illness. Sophomore Nick Stuart who has had an excellent season also became sick at the competition. Stuart finished the race in 92nd place. Sophomore Dave Guerra had a good showing in Saturday’s race and came out with all-district honors. Guerra placed first for the Noles with a time of 32:23, and finished the race in 22nd place.

Rounding out the finishers for the Seminoles were Danny Fritz (59th- 33:20), Brian Fleishmann (62nd- 33:24), Dan Clark (63rd- 33:27), Ryan Hicks (76th- 33:53), and Eric Ritchson (88th- 34:19).

“The men competed well, defiantly better than at the ACC Championships,” said Braman. “Dave Guerra earned all-district honors, which was a very positive note. Our team leader on the men’s side, Nick Stuart, also became sick and it adversely affected his race. Plug him in at his predicted finish and we are in the top five, which was our goal.”
