CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The FSU men’s cross country team followed up their season opening victory at West Florida with a third place finish (117 points) among 13 teams at the ACC Preview Meet hosted by the Virginia. The women were eighth of 14 with a total of 227 points in the 5K event. Wake Forest took the team title on the men’s side and William and Mary won for the women.
Senior Aaron Scheer was the top runner for the Seminole men with a seventh place finish overall and a time of 26:24.10 on the 8K course. A pack of FSU runners made up the last four spots on the scoring sheet. Jorge Rivera (27:27), Brandon Spears (27:31.70), Tommy Kunish (27:37.90) and Zach Heissner (27:38.50) finished 29th through 32nd, respectively.
The women were paced by sophomore Cynthia Campbell’s 13th place effort and time of 18:34. Diana Hartnup (42nd – 19:53), Mary Gaskins (50th – 20:05), Kingsley Broughton (91st – 21:16) and Amanda Wilson (21:37) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Seminoles. The team was without one of their top runners, Natalie Reid, who was sidelined with an injury.
“This was an interesting meet for the men and women,” said head coach Scott Irving. “Aaron Scheer challenged the leaders and he cam move up in the ACC from his finish last year. Cynthia Campbell had her best race since she has been at FSU, so both of them had a good opener. I think we finally have some athletes that believe they can run with the best in the country.”
Next up for the men’s and women’s cross country teams is the NCAA Region IX Preview on September 26th at Birmingham, AL.
