BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams completed their 1998 seasons with respectable showings at the NCAA South Regional Championship, held at Spain Park in Birmingham, Alabama. The men placed ninth of 24 teams while the women finished 13th among 23 teams.
For the men, senior Aaron Scheer was 22nd overall in the 10K field of over 150 competitors. Scheer crossed the finish line in a time of 32:23.16 to pace the Seminoles. Making up the other four spots in the scoring were: Brandon Spears (49th – 33:22.68), Zach Heissner (51st – 33:26.37), Brady Thomas (59th – 33:37.59) and Michael Maier (68th – 33:48.40).
The women were led by sophomore Cynthia Campbell, who placed 36th with a time of 18:19.58 on the 5K course. Diana Hartnup was close behind, checking in at 18:22.06 and finishing 38th. Kingsley Broughton (59th – 18:57.52), Mary Gaskins (65th – 19:01.25) and Natalie Reid (113th – 19:58.01) rounded out the Lady Seminole scoring. The top five for the FSU women consisted of one junior and four sophomores.
