FSU Defeats NC State, 4-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On Thursday, March 30th at the Scott Speicher
Tennis Center, the 55th-ranked Florida State Seminoles improved their record
to 11-6 on the season and 3-3 in the ACC with a 4-3 win over 75th-ranked
North Carolina State.

“We played good matches and fought hard,” said FSU head coach Dwayne
Hultquist. “North Carolina State was good competition and with the win our
record is now even in the ACC. Chad Mooney played well, coming from behind
and winning his match to secure the victory for us.”
At No. 1 singles, FSU’s Xavier Luscan took the Wolfpack’s Eric Jackson to the
limit before falling 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4). FSU senior Mike Ingham provided a
boost to the Seminoles by defeating Devang
Desai at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-2.

The win improves Ingham’s
overall season record to 14-11 while raising his dual match record to 9-7.
The Noles dropped two points to the Wolfpack at the No. 3 and No. 4
positions. At No. 3 singles, FSU junior Jay Travis was defeated by Keith
Salmon while FSU sophomore Noah Schnell fell short of a victory in three sets
to Ryan Boward by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, the Wolfpack dropped two points
to the Noles. At No. 5 singles, FSU junior Chad Mooney pulled out the match
against Shawn Thomas of North Carolina State by a score of 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-2
while freshman Rodrigo Laub notched a victory against the Wolfpack’s Brad
Kilgore by a score of 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. The victories raise
Mooney’s season record at No. 5 singles to 2-2 and Laub’s season record at
No. 6 singles to 7-4.

In the doubles portion of Thursday’s match against these two ACC teams, the
Noles won two of three matches to clinch the point. Taking the two doubles
points for Florida State were the No. 1 doubles tandem of Luscan/Laub and the
No. 3 tandem of Ingham/Scarella. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Salmon/Jackson
from North Carolina State was defeated by a score of 8-4. At No. 3 doubles,
the FSU pair of Ingham/Scarella won their first match together in the
conference 8-4 over North Carolina State’s Desai/Boward.
