FRESNO, Calif. – The Florida State softball team dropped two more are the Hallowell Classic in Fresno, Calif., this afternoon. The Lady Seminoles fell to Cal-Poly 5-4 and #7 Fresno State 2-1 in eight innings.
The Lady Seminoles scored first against Cal-Poly off a single to leftfield from Kelly Miller with Rita Brooks scoring on a fielders choice to give FSU a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning. FSU scored against in the 4th off a single from Brooks for a 3-0 lead before Cal-Poly poured in the runs in the 5th inning. The Mustangs scored off a two run double from Nicole Dansby, a two run triple from Julie Furhman and a single RBI from Jackie Wayland to give Cal-Poly a 5-3 lead in the 5th inning. Brandi Stuart added another run in the 6th inning off an RBI single to centerfield to cut the lead to 5-4 but the Mustangs held on the take the win 5-4. Brooks led the Lady Seminoles, going a perfect 3-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases. Miller was also perfect from the plate, going 2-2 with a stolen base as well as Teresa Edenfield being perfect at the plate with a double. Jen White-Stokes took the loss (4-4), striking out one batter and walking two. Leslie Malerich came in to relieve in the 5th inning, giving up one hit and no runs.
In game two against #7 Fresno State, the Lady Seminoles held the Bulldogs to extra innings when FSU’s Natalie Bennett drove in a run for a 1-0 lead. Fresno State answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs for the 2-1 win. Brooks went 2-4 from the plate with Bennett going 1-3. Malerich took the loss, going to 10-7 on the season, striking out one batter and allowing two runs.
FSU goes to 15-13 on the season and concludes competition in the Hallowell Classic on Sunday. The Lady Seminoles face Illinois State at 11:00am followed by a match-up with Texas Tech 1:00pm.
