TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team will make its third consecutive appearance at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships, earning the third seed late Monday night in an announcement by the AVCA National Championship Selection Committee.
The Seminoles will be joined in Gulf Shores, Ala., from May 2-4 by No. 1 seed Southern California, No. 2 seed Pepperdine, No. 4 seed Hawai’i, No. 5 seed Florida International and No. 6 seed Stetson.
FSU and Pepperdine are the only teams to have been selected to all three National Championships, dating back the inaugural collegiate sand season in 2012.
The Seminoles (16-1) advanced to the National Semifinals in both 2012 and 2013.
“We are consistently showing that we can be a force to be reckoned with each year,” Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. “It’s exciting that we are maintaining this level. We started strong and we’ve established ourselves as one of the top sand programs in the country without a doubt.
“We’ve been ranked fourth all year, but we felt we should’ve been No. 3. It’s significantly a better draw in position No. 3. We are thrilled. It’s an easier path to the National Championship. We can’t wait to go to Gulf Shores and compete among the best.”
As in years past there will be a Team Championship and a Pairs Championship. The pairs field includes the top duos from the schools in the team competition as well as ten doubles teams identified as the `Best of the Rest’ from schools not in the team competition.
CBS Sports Network will televise portions of the competition in a two-hour special that will have three airings on May 26 (7 p.m. ET), May 30 (7:30 p.m. ET) and June 2 (7 p.m. ET).
The Team Championship will be held from May 2-3.
Florida State will open the Team Championship against No. 6 seed Stetson at 10 a.m. CT on May 2. The winner of that first round match will face two-seed Pepperdine at 1 p.m. CT.
The Semifinals will be at 11 a.m. CT and 12 p.m. CT on May 3 and the Championship Match is slated for 3:30 p.m.
The Pairs Championship bracket will begin at 8 a.m. CT on May 4 and the Pairs Championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Since suffering its only loss to No. 1 seed Southern California in a thrilling 3-2 match in Los Angeles on March 14, Florida State has won 11 consecutive duals. The Seminoles also defeated No. 5 seed FIU, 4-1, to open the season in addition to then-No. 3 and reigning national champion Long Beach State, 3-2, in March.
Florida State is 4-0 against opening round opponent, Stetson, all-time, defeating the Hatters 5-0 in each previous matchup.
The Seminoles will host a Garnet and Gold Intersquad match at 12 p.m. as a final tune-up before the national championships this Saturday at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.
