FSU Falls, 5-2, To USF In Season Opener

Jan. 23, 2010

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 15 Florida State women’s tennis team fell in its dual match season opener to in-state rival No. 75 USF, 5-2. The `Noles will now regroup and turn their attention to the ITA National Indoor Championships next weekend in Fresno, Calif.

“All credit to South Florida,” FSU Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “They came on a mission today. They came in and got after it. They gave us very little wiggle room. This isn’t one of those matches that when you leave the office it’s over. A lot has to be taken from this match. The discipline has to get better. Paying attention to detail has to be greater. We have to do a better job of when we put ourselves in positions to win, taking advantage of them.”

Juniors Federica Suess and Katie Rybakova stepped up to earn the `Noles two points against the Bulls’ force.

Suess, a native of Ludwigshafen, Germany, marked FSU’s first point on court six as she overpowered Natalia Guevara 6-3, 6-1.

Court two featured Rybakova fighting back in a three-set nail biter that saw the Coral Springs, Fla., native posting a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win over No. 52 Ecaterina Vasenina.

Although No. 23 Lauren McCreless (Ogden, Utah) didn’t walk away with a victory, the senior was able to push No. 77 Irene Rehberger to a three-set match after making a comeback in the second set on court one. McCreless was unable to withstand Rehberger’s power and fell 6-4, 6-7(3-7), 6-4.

As the only doubles team to earn a victory, court three featured Sucupira and Sargeant dominating Janet Bejkova and Ecaterina Vasenina 8-1.

“Hopefully a loss like this at home will light a fire in their bellies because we have a lot of learning from this loss,” Coach Hyde said. “This loss has to make us hungrier. We have two really tough matches in California no matter who we play. We have to get back to work tomorrow and prepare for practice on Monday. That hunger has to be greater.”
