CARY, NC- The No. 14 Florida State women’s tennis team (14-10) came to the end of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship road Saturday, April 24 as it fell to No.1 North Carolina, 4-0, at the Cary Tennis Park. In their third-consecutive, fourth overall, semifinal appearance, the Seminoles fell to the nation’s top team for the second time this season.
“It was a tough match,” FSU head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “North Carolina played very well and they didn’t give us a lot of wiggle room today. I wish we would have fought today a little more than we did, but we had a good tournament and there is no reason to hang our heads. We have a lot to prepare for looking ahead to the NCAA Tournament and hosting in a couple weeks.”
The Tar Heels established their foundation early on by posting back-to-back doubles wins on court two and one, respectively.
UNC continued their momentum in singles with three Tar Heels winning their matches in two sets.
The first `Nole to fall was Federica Suess as the junior was overpowered by Sophie Grabinski 6-1, 6-1 on court four.
The ACC Freshman of the Year Francesca Segarelli also did not find success on her court as the freshman lost to Jelena Durisic 6-2, 6-2 on court three.
Court four saw the Tar Heels securing their spot to the championship. In spite of putting up a good fight at first, Amy Sargeant wasn’t able resist Gina Suarez-Malaguti’s power as the freshman fell 7-6 (1), 6-0.
With the victory, North Carolina improved the all-time series record against Florida State to 17-15.
“All in all it was a great weekend and I am very proud of the girls’ effort this week,” Coach Hyde said. “We are ready for anyone we step on court with because we’ve played many top 10 opponents this season. We are going to be ready for the next phase in the season and we have our goal set for the NCAA’s Sweet Sixteen.”
