FSU Falls To Duke, 5-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla – The 55th-ranked Florida State Seminoles were defeated
Saturday, April 1, by a score of 5-2. The two points for FSU came from the
No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions where two major upsets occurred. FSU
sophomore Xavier Luscan defeated the 18th-ranked player in the nation while
senior Mike Ingham defeated the 50th-ranked player in the nation.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Xavier Luscan, who is ranked 28th in the country,
increased his ACC record to 4-3 by defeating Duke’s Ramsey Smith in three
sets, 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-4. Sealing another victory for the Seminoles was senior
Mike Ingham at No. 2 singles. Ingham’s defeat over the 50th-ranked player in
the nation, Doug Root, raises his ACC record to 4-2.

At No. 3 singles, junior Jay Travis fell short of a victory to Joel Spicher
by a score of 6-3, 6-3 while at No. 4 singles, sophomore Noah Schnell dropped
his match to Andres Pedroso, the nation’s 51st-ranked player, by a score of
6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Chad Mooney came out firing before falling in a match
that was tighter than the score indicates. Mooney lost to the country’s
79th-ranked player, Marko Cerenko at No. 5 singles by a score of 7-6, 6-1.
In the doubles portion of the match, the Seminoles were able to claim one of
the doubles matches, but ultimately lost the doubles point to Duke. At No. 1
doubles, the duo of Luscan/Laub lost to Smith/Root by a score of 8-5 while
the tandem of Travis/Schnell dropped their match to Pedroso/Spicher by a score of 8-2 at No. 2. The Seminoles only doubles win
came at No. 3, where the senior/sophomore duo of Ingham/Scarella who defeated
Jones/Yani by a score of 8-3. Ingham/Scarella are now 2-0 in ACC matches and
5-6 in dual matches.
