TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Playing for the second time in 2014 as part of USTA’s College MatchDay, the No. 43-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (9-7, 4-4 ACC) lost to No. 1 Duke (15-1, 6-1 ACC) by a score of 6-0 on March 23 at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Due to playing on ESPN3, singles were played before doubles. The doubles competition would have only been played had singles ended in a 3-3 tie.
Duke showed why they are the No. 1 team in the country by winning the first set on all six courts. The Blue Devils took a 1-0 match lead as Marianne Jodoin took a 6-0, 6-0, straight set victory over Majlena Pedersen on court six.
Juniors Mia Vriens on court three and Daneika Borthwick on court one each played some very competitive tennis against ITA top-35 opponents but were outlasted in the end. Vriens lost to No. 31 Hanna Mar, 6-3, 6-2, while Borthwick lost to No. 6 Beatrice Capra, 6-2, 6-2.
Kristina Schleich played some amazing tennis and narrowly lost the first set against ITA No. 94 Alyssa Smith, 7-5. The senior from Germany would build on the momentum and take the second set, 6-1, to force a third set. Duke’s Smith would control the final set and close out the match with a 6-0 score.
The Seminoles will next take to the court on March 30 as they welcome North Florida and Florida A&M to the Scott Speicher Tennis Center at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively.
