CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Florida State’s final road game of the season ended in a 79-58 defeat at North Carolina Sunday afternoon.
The Seminoles (15-14, 7-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) will now close out the regular season with consecutive home games against Virginia (Thursday) and NC State (Saturday) before returning to North Carolina for the ACC Tournament in Greensboro starting March 14.
Against the Tar Heels (21-8, 11-5), who extended their winning streak to five games, FSU simply couldn’t bounce back from their hosts’ 20-3 run in the first half that helped build a 46-27 halftime advantage. The ‘Noles clawed back to within a 53-41 deficit with 12:39 to play but Carolina sustained a hot shooting touch throughout the contest at the Dean Dome.
UNC finished the game 32-of-57 for a 56.1 shooting percentage from the field and a 60-percent clip from 3-point range. The Seminoles shot 38.3 percent from the field and just 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Senior guard Michael Snaer scored 17 points for Florida State while freshman Devon Bookert added 10 points and team highs in rebounds (nine) and assists (four). Kiel Turpin added nine points and Okaro White and Robert Gilchrist posted six each.
Terrence Shannon, who sustained a neck injury against the Cavaliers Jan. 19, made his first appearance since that setback. The redshirt junior forward played three minutes and scored two points.
James Michael McAdoo scored 21 for the ‘Heels and Reggie Bullock added a 20-points and 10-rebounds double-double. P.J. Hairston contributed 16.
FSU had seven blocks and seven steals but had just 10 assists compared to UNC’s 20. The ‘Noles led 15-14 before Carolina’s pivotal first-half run.
