FSU Fares Well At 2009 UCA/UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team Competition

Jan. 23, 2009

After a 10-year hiatus from the competitive cheerleading world, the Florida State Cheerleaders returned to the national stage at the 2009 UCA/UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship competing alongside the FSU Golden Girls.  Teams from 43 states and 152 universities and colleges competed January 16-19th in Orlando, Florida.  FSU was well-represented with teams competing in the following divisions:  All Girl Division I (Cheer), Cheer Division IA, Division IA Hip Hop, and Division IA Dance.

The Golden Girls had one of their best performances in program history finishing 2nd in the Dance division and 5th in the Hip Hop division.  The Golden Girls had finished in the top five three consecutive years before dropping to sixth place last year in the Dance division.

The 2nd place finish is the highest finish for the Golden Girls in the Dance division while 5th place ties their highest finish in the Hip Hop division.  This season, however, is the first time they have finished in the top five in both divisions in the same year.

“These girls have worked so hard for this,” Head Coach Wendy Crawford said.  “After dropping out of the top five last year, we felt we had something to prove this year.”

The FSU Coed cheerleading squad advanced to the Final round of competition and placed 13th overall.

“I’m really proud of all of them,” Coach Chad Parnell said. “Our goal was to make it to finals and we achieved that, so next year we can focus on making top 10.”

The All-Girl squad missed advancing to Finals by only two spots.

“This was definitely a learning experience for us,” Head Coach Staci Sutton said.  “We can’t wait to come back next year and prove we belong here.”

UCA Founder, Jeff Webb echoes this belief calling Florida State “a team to look out for in the future.”

The top five teams from each division will be shown on ESPN2.  Below are the tentative airdates for each division.
