TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 25-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (8-4, 3-1 ACC) are on the road this weekend as they face Syracuse (1-8, 1-3 ACC) and No. 31 Notre Dame (5-5, 0-3 ACC). The Seminoles will play the Orange on March 7 at 2:00 p.m., and take on the Fighting Irish on March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
“This is our first time seeing Syracuse and Notre Dame as part of the ACC,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “Obviously we will be indoors as the temperatures will be in the 10s or 20s at most. I expect both matches to be dogfights. You can expect that from anyone in our conference. We are excited to get up there and play against some new competition.”
Juniors Kerrie Cartwright, Daneika Borthwick and Mia Vriens have carried the Seminoles this year. Each have at least 10 wins, led by Cartwright’s 17-6 record. Cartwright has a 4-0 singles record in ACC play and a 3-0 record at the No. 1 position. She has won four in a row and six of her last seven singles matches.
Borthwick (12-8) and Vriens (10-3) have put together solid seasons of their own. Both are 3-1 in conference this spring and playing some excellent tennis right now. Borthwick is 2-1 at the second position and had won six of her last eight matches overall.
Vriens has won nine of her last ten matches and has won nine different sets in 2013-14 without surrendering a game, winning each with a flawless 6-0 score. She is a perfect 5-0 on court four this year.
Seniors Kristina Schleich and Laurence Porry have helped anchor the squad on court five with 4-1 and 2-1 records, respectively. Schleich is 3-1 against ACC opponents while Porry has posted big wins against USF and Stetson.
Freshman Majlena Pedersen and Duda Santos are undefeated in conference play and Daniela Schippers has seen a lot of success in both singles and doubles, posting six singles wins and a 7-2 record in doubles including a 5-2 doubles record when paired up with Vriens.
