TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lady Seminoles head to Boca Raton, Fla., this weekend to compete in the Florida Atlantic Softball Tournament February 26-27. FSU will take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday, February 26 at Noon followed by a match-up with Florida Atlantic at 2:00pm. The Lady Seminoles will conclude action on Sunday with a game against Villanova at 10:00am and Furman at Noon.
Florida State is coming off a 6-0 sweep last week, taking two from Bethune-Cookman (9-0 and 1-0), Mercer (7-0 and 7-4) and Stetson (2-0 and 8-2). Rita Brooks led the team with a .429 batting average and six stolen bases. Teresa Edenfield led the team in scoring with seven RBI’s including a two run shot over the left center wall. Pitcher Leslie Malerich went 5-0 last week, striking out 23 batters in 21 innings, earning ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
Hitting Streak Ends
Rita Brook had a streak going – until the championship game vs. Cal. Berkley at the Lady Seminole Classic. Brooks had begun the season with hits in her first seven games of the year hitting .434 during the process. Brooks is third on the team with a .404 batting average to go along with her 12 steals on the year.
Speed on the basepath
The Florida State Lady Seminoles go into this weekend with 31 stolen bases. That is an average of 2.3 steals a game. Leading the team with 12 stolen bases is junior centerfielder Rita Brooks off 15 attempts. Sophomore Brandi Stuart is a perfect 11-11 on stolen bases.
Inside the Park
Junior Jennifer White-Stokes hit an inside the park home run on Saturday, Feb 12 against FAMU. The ball got caught in the sun in the fifth inning and by the time it was retrieved, White-Stokes had crossed the plate safely to give the Lady Noles a 7-5 lead over FAMU in the Seminole Classic.
The Lady Noles have only given up 19 runs in the 14 games that they have played this year. That is an average of 1.4 runs per game. On the other side of the ball, the Lady Noles have scored 69 runs through the first 14 games for an average of 4.9 per game. The Lady Noles have shut out seven opponents and have been shut out themselves twice, both 1-0 games against nationally ranked Cal-Berkley Golden Bears.
Records at the complex
Two records were tied or broken during the Lady Seminole Classic over the weekend. The Cal-Berkley Bears tied the record for team rbi’s with 10 and set a new records for runs by one team in a game with 14 against FAMU on Feb 12.
Senior Teresa Edenfield and Junior Kelly Miller hit homeruns this week in games vs. Bethune-Cookman and Stetson university respectively. Edenfield hit her third of the year and Miller’s homerun was her first of the season and second of her career. Kimmy Carter is also a member with her first homerun as a Lady Seminole was against Florida A&M.
Edenfield leads the team and the ACC with 15 RBI’s on the season. She has already surpassed her total of 13 from last year and is closing in on her single season high of 16 that she recorded as a sophomore in 1998. She had seven RBI’s in six games this past week in games vs. Stetson, Bethune-Cookman and Mercer.
Twice is Nice
Sophomore Leslie Malerich won her second consecutive ACC pitcher of the week award for the week of February 21st. For the week, she compiled a 5-0 record while not allowing a run in 21 1/3 innings of work. Malerich now leads the ACC with a 9-1 record on the season with a 0.56 ERA. She has not allowed a run in 28 1/3 consecutive innings and has 55 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings pitched.
The Lady Seminoles have won six games in a row heading into this weekend’s tournament at Florida Atlantic.
Brooks continues hot hand
Junior college transfer Rita Brooks continues to lead the starters in hitting with a .404 average. In the six games played the week of Feb 21st, Brooks went 9-for-21 with six stolen bases and two RBI’s. She has started another hitting streak that is now at six games. She has hit safely in 13 of 14 games this season.
The Lady Seminoles played in their second extra inning game of the year on Saturday, Feb 19 as the Lady Noles beat Bethune-Cookman 1-0 in nine innings. This improves their record in extra inning games this season to 2-0.
The Lady Seminoles are averaging 4.9 runs a game so far this season on 69 runs scored in the 14 games that they have played. On the other side of the ball, the Lady Noles have given up only 19 runs on the year. That average is 1.4 runs per game.

Freshman Brandi Stuart is a perfect 11-for-11 in stealing bases this season. She is second on the team in stolen bases behind Rita Brooks who has 12. Senior Felicia Williams has 5 stolen bases on 5 attempts in limited playing time. Brooks and Stuart are 1st and 2nd in this department in the ACC respectively

When it comes to the ACC standings, FSU is written everywhere. As a team FSU holds third in batting, second pitching wise, and second in fielding. Aside from team standings FSU also shines while seven players hold standings of their own.
Taking over the ACC
Starting with Edenfield the Lady Seminoles have placed in every category of the ACC standings this year. Edenfield is ranked thrid in three different categories starting with home runs, then rbi’s, as well as in double’s. Bennet was ranked fourth in doubles, and Gauger is ranked third in strikeouts. Kimmy Carter is another of Fsu’s finest, being ranked second in triples, and ninth in batting. One of Florida State’s pitchers, Leslie Malerich is also ranked in three different categories. Malerich is ranked first for most victories won, third for era, and fourth for the most strikeouts. Brooks and Stuart are the final Lady Seminoles to add to the list, with Brooks ranked first in stolen bases and sixth in batting, and Stuart ranked second for the most stolen bases.
