Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 26 Florida State women’s tennis squad (17-7) dropped the semifinal match of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship to the Duke Blue Devils, 4-1 on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) was the only Seminole to put points on the board, winning her 24th consecutive match at the number two position, besting All-ACC selection Jenny Zika, 7-5, 6-1.

The Tribe opened the afternoon, losing two matches in the doubles area to give Duke the first point of the afternoon. Moldovan, paired with freshman Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) lost to Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith, 8-4. The veteran senior tandem of Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN) and Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bradenton) lost at the number three position to Zika and Katie Blaszak, 8-4.

Aside from Moldovan’s singles win, the Seminoles battled for points, with senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) taking Amanda Johnson to three sets before succumbing. Dumitrescu picked up the middle set and almost won the third but dropped it posting a final tally of 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Dumitrescu beat Johnson earlier in the season, when the Blue Devil was ranked seventh in the country. Clarke lost in straight sets at the number four position while sophomore Alina Mihailescu (Constanta, Romania/Mircea cel Batran) was defeated 6-2, 6-3, to give Duke enough points for the team victory.

Duke advances to the championship game, scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. The Seminoles return home to await the NCAA Tournament selection announcement, scheduled to begin late next month.
