CARY, N.C. – Third ranked Florida State (16-3-1) will take the field on Sunday, November 8 in search of its first ACC Championship. The Seminoles, the top seeded team in this year’s conference tournament, faces third-seeded North Carolina (16-3-1) at 2:00 p.m., on WakeMed Park in Cary.
Sunday marks the fifth championship appearance for the Seminoles and third in the last four years. The Noles have faced the Tar Heels in each of their five appearances in the finals. Three of the four title games played between these two schools have been decided by one goal including the last three (2003, 06, 07). Sunday’s match-up marks the third time FSU and UNC will play for the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. (2003, 06, 09).
The two schools squared-off in Tallahassee back on October 22, a game won by FSU 3-2 in double overtime. Sophomore Ella Stephan recorded the game-winner on a header off a corner kick with just 12 seconds remaining in the game. With the win, the Seminoles snapped the Tar Heels 14-game unbeaten streak in the series.
This marks the 11th consecutive meeting in which these two teams have faced each other while ranked in the top 10. Nine of the last 11 games including seven straight have been decided by one goal or less, while five of the last seven contests have been decided in extra periods.
The Seminoles reached the finals following a pair of 2-0 victories over Duke and Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels defeated Maryland in the first round and then got by Boston College on an own goal in double overtime.
Florida State is 7-7-5 in ACC Tournament games played in the state of North Carolina. The field at Cary has been a kind one to the Seminoles during the league tournament as FSU is 6-3-3 in six total trips. The Garnet and Gold improved to 9-12-5 all-time in the ACC Tournament following Friday’s semifinal victory over Virginia Tech.
Sunday’s ACC Championship final will broadcast live on FoxSports South, FoxSports Florida, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and NESN. Fans in Tallahassee can catch the game on FS Florida, while fans outside the Tallahassee area are encouraged to check their local listing.
