FSU Men Win Tennis Doubles At The ITA Summer College Circuit

Tallahassee, Fla. – During Wednesday’s (July 12th) third day of the ITA Summer College Circuit, Florida State’s men’s tennis won the doubles competition while three players advanced to the finals at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in singles action.

Jason Hood (Columbia S.C./Richland Northeast) and Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Megga) overtook Josh Irey and George Navas 8-5 to win the doubles competition. They beat Owen Long and Cody Simmons 8-6 in the semi-finals.

In singles action, fourth seed Lauren Macfarlane (Odgen, Utah/Weber HS) beat Ghizela Schulte 6-3, 6-0 while seventh seed incoming freshmen Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas/Whitehouse HS) defeated Samantha Orlin 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. The freshmen will face each other in the finals Thursday, July 13th, at 8:30 a.m.

On the men’s side, first seed Sucupira dominated his opponent Zurab Zhania 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the finals against fifth seed Kyle Baker on July 13th, at 8:30 a.m.

Tapiwa Marobela, a junior from Gaborone, Botswana, with Vanderbilt partner Courtney Ulery topped Samantha Orlin and Ghizela Schutte 8-1. Macfarlane and Wente paired up against Andrea Brenes and Mari Muller in the semi-finals to lose 2-8.

In the men’s doubles consolation match, Chris Cloer (Brevard, NC/Brevard HS) and Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln) lost to Clifford Malivert and Zurab Zhvania by default.

All matches will be played Thursday, July 13th, at Scott Speicher Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m.
