Florida State University’s men’s swimming and diving team began the 2001-2002 with a 142-57 victory over the University of Miami Saturday morning at the Bim Stults Aquatic Center located on the FSU campus. Senior co-captain Richard Cowling won two events to lead the Seminoles as they improved their overall record over the Hurricanes to 28-15.
Cowling touched the wall in the 200-meter backstroke to finish with a time of 1:56.32, while finishing the 200m individual medley at 1:57.41. Two wins were also turned in by freshman Alan Ribeiro in the 500m free (4:44.46) and the 200m free (1:43.47).
Other first-place finishes were swam by sophomores Michael Paulus (100m free), Matt Wheeler (1:55.23) and Wickus Nienaber (50m free) and the 400-meter medley relay team of Cowling and juniors Justin Betts, Devin Crock and Matt Carmen.
In diving action, freshman Louie Gagnet placed second in the three-meter dive with a score of 216.3 and fourth in the one-meter event with 193.95 total points.
The Seminoles return to action on October 19, when they travel to College Park, Md. to take on the University of Maryland in their first Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet of the season.
