FSU Men’s Tennis Competes At The Southern Intercollegiate

ATHENS, Ga. – The Florida State men’s tennis team opened their Fall schedule competing at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga. over the weekend Sept. 8-10. Sophomore Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) picked up four consecutive wins for the Seminoles to advance to the semi-finals of the division two singles draw. Sophomore Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) earned a big singles win defeating the 31st ranked player in the nation and the doubles combination of freshmen Jean Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) and Bradley Mixon (Miami, Fla.) defeated the 10th ranked doubles tandem in the country.

Cloer shined for the Seminoles as he won his first match 6-2, 6-3 over Nicolas Legros from Lander. He followed that up by defeating Central Florida’s Johan Biegart 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 and Tennessee’s Kiril Tcherveniachki 7-6 (3), 6-1. He advanced into the semi-finals after beating Daniel Isaza from East Tennessee State 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Cloer was defeated in the semi-finals by Adam Hubble from Tennessee 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.

Florida State had five student-athletes competing in the division one singles draw. Sykut recorded a huge opening round win defeating Georgia Tech’s Eric Molnar 6-0, 6-1, who was ranked 31st in the country. Sykut would then drop his next match to South Alabama’s Marek Sramek 6-3, 6-2.

Aubone won his opening round match defeating Stephen Bruwer from UT Martin 6-4, 6-2. He then picked up his second win topping Evan Dufaux from Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-4. He would lose his third round match to Harel Srugo from Old Diminion 6-2, 6-4.

Junior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) also won his opening round match defeating South Florida’s Ales Svigeli 6-2, 6-4. Chang would then lose to Luis Flores from Georgia 6-1, 6-4. Seniors Ytai Abougzir (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jonathan Sucupira (Sao Paula, Brazil) each dropped their opening round matches 7-6 (5), 7-5 and 6-2, 6-0 respectively.

Sophomore Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) had an impressive showing as he advanced to the quarter-finals of the division three draw. He picked up his opening win over Guy David from Colorado State 6-2, 6-1. He won his next two matches defeating South Florida’s William Sousa 6-0, 7-5 and ETSU’s Alex Ahlgren 7-5, 6-3. He lost in the quarter-finals to Sam Huffman from Samford 7-6, 6-4. Sophomore Ryan Boyajian (Weston, Fla.) won his opening round match over Jim Freeman from Ball State 6-4, 7-5 then lost to Ricky Cuellar from UNC- Charlotte 6-1, 6-4.

Competing in the division one doubles draw, Aubone and Mixon had the most success for the Seminoles as they advanced to the quarter-finals. After receiving an opening round bye they defeated Mattos and Nicoara from Arkansas 8-5. They then went onto beat Rogers and Hubbel from Tennessee 9-8 (6), who were the 10th ranked doubles team in the country. They were defeated in the quarters by Doskarayer and Nagel from South Alabama 8-4.

Sucupira and Chang recorded two wins in the division one doubles draw. Their first came against Grant and Misner 8-5 and then their second came against Blackmon and Rath from GT 8-6. They were defeated by Cameron and Hensel from Tennessee 8-6.

The Seminoles’ Fall tennis schedule will continue when they hit the courts at the Thomasville Invitational in Thomasville, Ga. from Sept. 15-17.
