CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Florida State men’s tennis team traveled
to North Carolina Wednesday to compete in the Rolex Regional, being held on
the campus of the University of North Carolina. Wednesday tournament play
consisted of the qualifying rounds for singles and doubles play.
Seminole Joe Bassett was the first up for the Noles. Bassett was
defeated by WFU’s Andrew Simpson in the round of 64. Following with a
win stepped in senior Chad Mooney who defeated Ryan Heinberg of Duke, 6-2,
6-7, 6-4, advancing him to the round of 32 where he will face Amine
Elouazzani of HU Thursday at 8 a.m. Also advancing o the round of 32 will be
Seminole sophomore Noah Schnell, after defeating Liberty’s Bruno Coelho
7-6, 2-6, 6-4. Schnell will face Brett Mauro of WFU Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
Romain Jurd fell in tournament play to UNC’s Thomas Oggesen 6-7, 2-6.
Following the loss came a win by sophomore Jeff Scarella. Scarella advances
to the round of 32 after defeating HU’s Shaun Crichlow in straight
sets, 7-6, 6-3. Scarella will play again Thursday at 10:00 a.m. where he
will face Erik Petterson of HP. The final match of the day in singles
competition for the Seminoles ended with a loss by sophomore Rodrigo Laub.
Laub fell to Greg Archer of UNC 1-6, 6-7.
In doubles play the Seminole tandem of Bassett and Jurd advanced to the
round of 16 after the team of Marcos Pavlovich and Juan Yannuzzi of ETSU
suffered an injury and withdrew from the match. Laub and teammate Owen faced
Simon Dawson and Jonathan McGovern of UNCC, and the Seminole team of Schnell
and Scarella faced Auburns Tushar Garc and Andreas Kulscar. Results were not
available for these final matches.
Upcoming matches to be played consist of Seminole and No. 4 seed in
singles play, Xavier Luscan. Luscan will face an unknown Friday at 9:00 a.m.
Owen will face Marko Gojanovic of Clemson Friday at 8:00 a.m., freshman Alex
Herrera will face CSU’s Thomas Miho Friday at 12:30. In an upcoming
doubles match the tandem of Herrera and Luscan will face UNC’s Nicholas
Monroe and Marcio Patrone Thursday evening at 5:00.
Tournament competition will resume Thursday morning, and will conclude the
evening of Monday November 6th.
