FSU Men’s Tennis Completes Day One of Qualifying Action at ITA Region II Championships

The Florida State men’s team completed day one of the qualifying rounds of the ITA Region II Indoor Championships, being held from October 24 until the 28 at the University of North Carolina.


Seminole Rodrigo Laub fell in a tough loss to Wake Forests Derrick Spice this afternoon in three sets. Laub fell in the first set to Spice, 3-6, but would make a comeback taking the second set 6-3. In the third and final set Laub fell by a close score of 7-6 (3). Seminole senior Jeff Scarella went up against UNC-G’s Jason Varela taking the win, 6-3, 6-2. Scarella is set to face Juan Carlos Osorio of Campbell on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 10:00 a.m. FSU’s Gustav Bucht defeated JMU’s Mike Hendrickson this afternoon in straight sets. Bucht advances to round two where he will go up against UNC-G’s Tanner Hadden, Thursday at 11:00 a.m.


Qualifying doubles results were not available at the time of this release. The Seminole tandem of Laub and Xavier Luscan will face Wake Forests Rick Phillip and Andrew Simpson. Florida State’s Bucht and Romain Jurd are teamed together against UNC-G’s Paul Goode and Jason Varela.


Main draw action will begin Friday morning for the Seminoles when Xavier Luscan, who is seeded fourth in the tournament faces Charlotte’s Jacob Nordwall at 9:00 a.m. Joining Luscan will be sophomores Romain Jurd and Alex Herrera. Herrera will go up against the No. 5 seed of the tournament in Georgia Tech’s Roger Anderson at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.


Main draw doubles action begins on Thursday for the Seminoles as Jarrod Owen and Herrera team together to face the No. 1 seed of the tournament in Georgia Tech’s Roger Anderson and David Wright.
