FSU Men’s Tennis Drops First Match Of Season Against TCU

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Florida State Seminoles (1-0) defeated
the New Mexico Lobos (0-3) late Friday to win their first match of the
season. The 69th-ranked Noles upset the 31st-ranked Lobos 4-3.

Leading the way for the Seminoles was UCLA-transfer Xavier Luscan
who defeated the nation’s 10th-ranked player Matt Amgwerd in three sets,
2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Luscan then teamed with freshman Rodrigo Laub to win at No.
3 doubles over New Mexico’s Weiss and Russell, 8-6. Laub also won at No. 6
singles for the Noles. Laub defeated John Kowalski 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

Sophomore Jeff Scarella won in straight sets at No. 5 singles over
New Mexico’s Andrew Irving, 6-4, 6-2 to give the Seminoles a split in the
singles portion of the match. In doubles, following Laub’s and Luscan’s
win, the Noles needed just one more doubles victory to secure the match.
It came down to No. 2 doubles, where sophomore Noah Schnell and junior Jay
Travis were battling New Mexico’s Takeshi Itoh and Andrew Irving. Schnell
and Travis pulled out the match, 8-6, to give first year FSU head coach
Dwayne Hultquist the first win of his collegiate coaching career.

The Seminoles will return to the courts on Saturday to face Texas
Christian at 2 p.m. PST.
