TALLAHASSEE, FL.–The Florida State men’s tennis team came within one point of upsetting the 9th ranked University of Florida in today’s thriller at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
FSU’s Gustav Bucht and Alex Herrera played impressively in doubles and defeated the tandem of Nathan Overholser and Olivier Levant 9-8 at the No 1 position, but the Gators won at No. 2 and No 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
Florida State returned for the singles portion determined to turn the match around and things were looking good for the Noles early on. Rodrigo Laub played a terrific match at No. 6 singles and defeated UF’s West Nott in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Florida State’s sensational freshmen Jarrod Owen and Roman Jurd both collected wins in straight sets at No. 4 and No 5 singles respectively. The Gators got wins at the No 1 and No. 3 singles position to level the overall score in the dual match 3-3.
As things turned out, it all came down to the match between Florida State’s Xavier Luscan and Florida’s Olivier Levant at No. 2 singles. These two players, both natives of France, know each other extremely well and played a match that had everything the crowd could ask for. After taking the first set in a tie breaker, Levant went on to win the second set 6-4, thereby clinching the match for the Gators.
The Seminoles will now have on day to prepare for their next match as they are scheduled to play No. 49 Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Sunday February 11th.
