FSU Men’s Tennis Falls To No. 11 Texas 2-5

March 17, 2001

TALLAHASSEE, FL.– The Florida State men’s tennis team hoped to improve on their 6-7 season record (2-1 in the ACC), as they hosted the 11th-ranked University of Texas this afternoon. Despite great efforts by the Seminoles in both singles and doubles, the Longhorns came away with the 5-2 win.

Juniors Xavier Luscan and Bartosz Koldej teamed to take a 9-8 victory over Texas’ tandem of Jean Simon and Will Clinton at No. 2 doubles. However, Texas won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the first point of the day.

The Seminoles were looking to turn things around in singles, needing to win four out of six matches. Texas won in straight sets at the No. 5 singles position to increase their lead to 2-0, but with the five other matches going to a third and decisive set, the Noles still had an opportunity to upset the Longhorns.

Luscan battled UT’s Jean Simon at the No. 1 spot before falling 1-6, 6-3, 5-7, putting Texas ahead, 3-0. Ron Kloppert clinched the match for Texas a few minutes later by defeating Jarrod Owen 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles position.

Despite having lost the overall match, the Noles were determined to put some points on the board. Rodrigo Laub came back from being down 0-3 in the third set to get the 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over UT’s Alastair Jenkin at No. 6, while team mate Romain Jurd collected a win in three sets by defeating Jorge Haro at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

The men will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday March 18th, when they are scheduled to play ACC rival Maryland at 1:00 p.m.
