TALLAHASSEE, FL.- Florida State men’s tennis team opened their home season on Sunday with a 6-1 win over Georgia Southern. The men’s team started the afternoon off sweeping the Eagles in doubles competition and then losing only one match in singles play.
In doubles play the Seminoles played hard and came away with two matches that were won in a tiebreaker. Alex Herrera and Jeff Scarella took the first doubles match of the day defeating Ryan O’Keefe and Florian Scheidat 8-6. Next to finish for the Noles and clinch the doubles point would be Romain Jurd and Rodrigo Laub. The tandem defeated Uli Ebensberger and Dru Rroycik 9-8 (7-4). Making it a clean sweep in doubles play Bartos Koldej and Jarrod Owen won 9-8 (7-4).
In the singles portion of play it was the Seminoles who stepped it up again winning five of the six matches, three of which would come down to a third set. Romain Jurd defeated Scheidat in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, while teammate Laub was defeating Ebensberger 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Scarella came back to take the win over Darren Clark winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, as well as Chad Mooney who came back for the win over Roycik 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Finishing the final match of the day was freshman Owen who defeated Nowak 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. With this win the Seminoles now lead Georgia Southern in the all-time series 27-5.
The Seminoles will continue practice throughout the week as they prepare to host the No.9 ranked Florida Gators Friday February 9th at 5:30.
