Sept. 24, 2009
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State Men’s Tennis officially released their 2009-10 schedule on Thursday, September 24. The Seminoles will host their only fall tournament, the Seminole Invitational on October 2-4 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. They open their spring dual-match season with a home match against Furman on February 5.
Coming off back-to-back trips to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, Florida State looks to prove itself again in 2009-10 by playing some of the best teams in the country. Every non-conference match on the schedule will be against a team that was ranked last season. Eleven matches will be against teams that won 16 or more matches a year ago.
Two of the toughest road contests for the Seminoles will be a trip to Charlottesville, Va., to battle defending ACC Champion Virginia on March 28, as well as a trip on March 10 to Austin, Texas, to face a Texas team that was a semifinalist in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
“We’re very excited about our 2010 spring schedule. We have some great matches with the best teams in the country,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Playing at Texas, who were national semifinalists last year, and playing on the road at Florida will be a great match. We also have a home match against Pepperdine who won the national title a few years back (in 2006).”
The ACC has always been a competitive conference and this year will be no different. The conference placed seven teams in the NCAA Tournament a year ago with four of them making the Round of 16.
“We have a terrific schedule, a lot of great home matches against Duke and North Carolina, and we go on the road against a Virginia team that should be #1 or #2 in the nation in the beginning,” said Hultquist. “We have 14 home matches, which is about the most that we’ve had in recent years, and every match we’ll play on the road will be a big match, so we’re excited about our year.”
Florida State will also be host to the opening rounds of the 2010 ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships on January 29-30. The Seminoles will be bringing in Wisconsin, Louisville and LSU for the opening rounds of the double elimination tournament.
Other noteworthy home matches include USF on February 6, Notre Dame on March 14, and Wake Forest on April 4.
