CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Florida State men’s tennis team will travel to the University of North Carolina to compete in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mideast Men’s Regional Championship, October 18-22. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship hosted by Ohio State at the Racquet Club of Columbus, November 2-5.
The Seminoles have a total of eight entries into the tournament. Sophomore Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) and freshman Michael O’Shea (Boca Raton, Fla.) will be the first Seminoles in action as they will compete in the qualifying singles draw on Wednesday, October 18. Bailey will take on Arsel Kumdereli from UNC Greensboro at 10:00 a.m. while O’Shea will battle Disa Mhembre from Morgan State at 12:30 p.m. Seniors Ytai Abougzir (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jonatha Sucupiras (Sao Paulo, Brazil), junior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan), sophomores Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) and Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) and freshman Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) have already qualified and will compete starting Thursday.
The 2006 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships is the second of the three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first was the Riviera/ITA Women’s and Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s All-American Championships, which were held earlier this month and the third is the season ending NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32 player singles field and 16 team doubles field for men and women. More than 7,000 players form nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
After the ITA Indoor Championships, Florida State will host the Seminole Invitational at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center November 3-5
