TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the fourth time in the history between the
two Tallahassee schools, the 54th-ranked Florida State Seminoles upset the
53rd-ranked Florida A&M Rattlers by a score of 5-2 on Friday, April 28th.
This added match for the Seminoles raised their season record to 14-10
while reducing the Rattlers record to 21-5.
Clinching the doubles point to begin the match at 1-0, the Florida
State Seminoles took two of three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the
tandem of Xavier Luscan/Rodgiro Laub defeated Isaac Yarrell/Robert
Beautelus by a close score of 9-8 (3) to increase their overall record at
No. 1 to 4-8. The second doubles point was earned at the No. 3 position by
the duo of Mike Ingham/Jeff Scarella. This win was the Seminoles fifth at
the No. 3 position. Dropping the lone doubles point, the duo of Jay
Travis/Noah Schnell were defeated by the Rattler duo of Ivan Lolic/Joseph
Clark by a score of 8-6.
Three of the six sinlges matches resulted in straight set victories
for the Seminoles. At No. 1 singles, Luscan defeated Levin Mongerie by a
score of 6-3, 6-1 while at No. 2 singles, Ingham won his 18th match of
the season with his win over Jerry Joseph by a score of 6-3, 6-2. In the
final straight set win of Friday’s match, sophomore Scarella increased his
winning streak to three by defeating Wadawu by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
The Noles dropped only two singles matches to the Rattlers, at the
No. 3 and No. 5 positions. Sophomore Schnell dropped his overall season
record to 10-14 as a result of his loss to Lolic by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
The second singles loss of the evening came from freshman Laub who was
defeated by Beautelus by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (4).
The lone three set match of the night was won by FSU sophomore Chad
Mooney by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Mooney came from behind to pull off
the match and earn his third win at the No. 4 position by defeating Isaac
Yarrell from FAMU.
