FSU Men’s, Women’s Cross Country Place Second At Florida Intercollegiate Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State University cross country team finished second in the university division at the Florida State Intercollegiate Championships in both the men’s and women’s competition Saturday morning at Miccosukee Greenway Park in Tallahassee, Fla.


The men’s university division was comprised of ten schools from the state of Florida running an 8K course. The Seminoles, in a bid to defeat the University of Florida for the first time in 20 years, fell eight points shy (33 points) of the Gators’ winning score of 25. The ‘Noles were lead by junior newcomers Kim Bergdahl and Joep Tigchelaar, who finished third and fifth, respectively. Fellow junior Nick Stuart placed seventh, senior Tommy Kunish tenth and freshman Ryan Albertson sixteenth to round out the FSU scorers.


North Florida’s Zepherinus Joseph won the overall competition with a run of 24:22.62, while Florida’s Chris Duncan placed second at 24:33.71.


In women’s action, ten school’s competed in the university division on a 6K course. The Lady Seminoles defeated the University of Florida for the first time since 1984, as they turned in a score of 37 points, 22 points better than the Gators’ score of 59. South Florida won the division with a score of 33. Lady Seminole hopeful Vicky Gill, who ran unattached, won the individual competition with a time of 20:46.96.


FSU’s top scorer Allison Lind, a junior who earned ACC Performer of the Week honors in the first week of competition, placed fourth overall. Junior Misty Harper finished sixth, senior Brooke Bastien ninth, freshman Natalie Hughes 13th and junior Katie Jeffery 14th to round out the Lady ‘Nole scorers.


USF’s Tara Quinn finished second with a time of 21:25.59 and Florida’s Erin Merten second at 21:29.02.

The Seminoles return to action next Saturday, September 29, when they travel to Auburn, Ala. to compete in the Auburn Invitational.
