Postgame Notes and Quotes
By hitting a pair of triples in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Florida State increased its national lead to 22 triples.
Sophomore pitcher Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) threw a career-high 19 strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader against NC State. It’s the most strikeouts in the last five seasons, exceeding Jessica van der Linden’s 18 against Boston University on March 22, 2003.
Speaking of triples, the three-bagger by Veronica Wootson (Fontana, Calif.) was her seventh of the season and tied four players, including herself, for the seventh-highest single-season total.
On the career charts, the triple moved Wootson up a spot to number eight. The second baseman now has 16 for her career, tying her with Susan Buttery (1990-93) and she is one back of Leslie Barton, Brandi Stuart and Jessica van der Linden for fifth in FSU history and ninth in ACC lore.
Also moving up on the single season charts was shortstop Yuruby Alicart (Maracay, Venezuela). Her double in game two was her 14th of the season to move her into a tie for second on the single-season charts. The junior drove in four runs in the nightcap to up her season total to 42, the tenth-highest total in a season.
FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf:
On Tiffany McDonald’s performance: “Tiffany threw an awesome game it was one she deserved to win. I’m disappointed our hitters didn’t get her at least a run in regulation, because she threw an awesome game and that’s disappointing as a pitcher. She maintained her focus and she threw an awesome game.”
On game two hitting: “We hit the ball better in the second game, but again we gave up more runs than we scored so that’s disappointing in itself. I think Kayla had one bad inning and if she doesn’t have that one bad inning we win the ball game.”
