DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off an impressive two-game, mid-week sweep of No. 18 UCF down in Orlando, the eighth-ranked Florida State Seminoles (11-1) continue on its six-game road swing as they head to Durham to face Duke (7-8) in the first weekend of ACC play.
The Seminoles own a record of 65-19 all-time against the Blue Devils and are 21-8 when playing Duke in Durham. FSU has never dropped a series against Duke in Durham in 10 previous trips. FSU and Duke are squaring off to open league play for the third time since the `Noles joined the league in 1992 and for the first time since 2000. Florida State has won four in a row and 23 of the last 26 games in the series. Nine of the last 26 games have been decided by three runs or less with FSU owning a record of 7-2.
Florida State is 18-2 all-time in series victories when opening ACC play. FSU is 5-1 in ACC opening weekend series against Duke playing the Blue Devils in the Seminoles’ first year in the league in 1992 (2-1) and again in 2000 (3-0).
In 2010, the two schools played at the USA Baseball Field in Cary, N.C., with FSU taking two of three games outscoring Duke 30-16. Last year, the Seminoles swept the three-game series in Tallahassee winning by scores of 2-1, 10-3 and 13-9.
Both Sherman Johnson and Sean O’Brien hit .500 in the series a season ago pacing the Seminole offense which hit .290 as a team. Johnson led all `Noles in hits (6) and doubles (3) and tied Jayce Boyd with a team-high five RBI. The Seminole pitching staff, led by Sean Gilmartin’s career-high 13 strikeouts in Friday’s 2-1 victory, posted a 3.67 ERA while holding the Blue Devils to a team average of .228.
Florida State will open league play on the road for just the second time since joining the league back in 1992. The Seminoles played at Virginia in 2002 and took two of three from the Cavaliers.
All three games in Durham will be played at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and will be streamed live over the internet on GoDuke.com. Fans can follow live stats at GoDuke.com and receive updates on Twitter @FSU_Baseball.
