GULF SHORES, Ala. – The No. 3-seeded Florida State sand volleyball team got off to a spectacular start at the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships by sweeping No. 6-seed Louisiana-Monroe, 5-0, on Friday morning.
The Seminoles (16-2) dropped only one set to the Warhawks en route to advancing to face No. 2-seed Long Beach State at 1 p.m. CT.
“Can you start any better – five wins and no losses,” sophomore Melanie Pavels said. “We only dropped one set total. I think we are playing great in this wind and in this new sand. Let’s beat Long Beach State next.”
FSU already had the match sealed up in under hour as the Garnet and Gold earned two-set sweeps on Courts 2 through 5.
Sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and her sister, freshman Nina Pellitteri, captured the most decisive win, a dominant 21-7, 21-5 triumph on Court 5.
The most exciting match of the first round came on Court 1 where sophomores Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom outlasted ULM’s top duo of Tetiana Sukach and Zuzana Markova in three sets, 21-13, 13-21, 17-15.
Pardon and Wickstrom trailed 14-13 in the final set, but rallied back to grab the win after Pardon unloaded a match-sealing kill down the line after a perfect low set from Wickstrom.
“Obviously, it’s a great win for us,” Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. “I have a ton of respect for ULM’s No. 1 (team). They’ve beat us, and we’ve beat them throughout the season. They’re very experienced … so to win in that fashion – 18-16 – in the third, it’s a great win for Wickstrom and Pardon and for the Noles.”
