Final Stats

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 22nd-ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (2-2, 0-1 ACC) snapped a two-match skid with an attractive 5-2 win over 49th-ranked Pennsylvania (1-1) at Scott Spiecher Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The match was the first of a tripleheader scheduled for the Seminoles over the weekend; Furman (0-3) and No. 75 Nebraska (1-0) are also participating in the quad event.

All four schools were scheduled to play doubles matches Friday night but lightning spotted in the vicinity rescheduled the matches for Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

After losing the doubles point, the Seminoles grabbed five singles victories at the top three spots. No. 72 Ytai Abougzir defeated Jason Pinsky 6-4, 6-3 and 49th-ranked Sam Chang upended Mihail Bekker 7-6, 6-0. At the third position, senior Chris Westerhof rolled over Jonathan Boym 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5, freshman Chris Cloer picked up his first collegiate singles win with a three set (6-0, 4-6, 7-6[3]) victory versus Brandon O’Gara. Junior Jason Hood fought through a three-set match against Jimmy Fairbanks and won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Penn’s only singles victory of the day was at No. 4 with Joseph Lok beating Florida State freshman Maciek Sykut, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“I thought we did a good job of bouncing back after losing the doubles point,” said Florida State head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I am most proud of Jason…I think his match today was the biggest win of his career. I hope we can carry this momentum into tomorrow because both Nebraska and Furman are competitive teams.”

In doubles action, the Sykut and Andrew Bailey duo earned the Seminoles only win. The pair overpowered Boym and Bekker at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. At No. 1, Abougzir and Westerhof came up short, 9-8, to Pinsky and Lok, while Justin Fox and O’Gara beat FSU’s Chang and Cloer, 8-4.

Florida State will face Nebraska at 9:00 a.m. Saturday followed by a 2:00 p.m. showdown against Furman. Also today, Nebraska edged Furman, 4-3.
