HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – At the conclusion of day one of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championship, Florida State represented at the top of four different pools, with the senior pairs of Paranagua/Freire and Luke/Horton finishing at the top of their respective brackets.
The Seminoles’ three women’s teams and lone men’s pair are competing in a 32-team bracket for a spot to represent the United States at the 2018 FISU World University Championship.
In Pool B, Tory Paranagua and Vanessa Freire only played one match with a first-round bye, defeating Long Beach State’s Karelov/Reinking to finish at the top of their pool. The 49ers had defeated LSU’s Allen/Davenport to reach the next round.
Paranagua/Freire earned the second seed in the women’s playoff bracket, and will play the winner of South Carolina’s Bates/Smith and LMU’s Slattery/Leiphardt on Friday at 5:00 pm EST.
Hailey Luke and Katie Horton finished at the top of Pool C with a pair of victories. The two defeated South Carolina’s Mannisto/Schnieder in the first round and took down Pepperdine’s Roh/Bauer in straight sets. The pair sent Mannisto/Schnieder to the third-place bracket, where they finished behind Georgia State’s Van Gunst sisters.
Luke/Horton earned the third seed in the women’s playoff bracket, and will play the winner of Tulane’s McHugh/Mertz and HBU’s Wooten/Horton Friday at 5:00 pm EST.
Macy Jerger and Sara Putt faced tough competition early on in Pool H, winning the first set but dropping the next two to Washington’s Anderson/Gardiner. The pair moved on to the third-place bracket, where they beat UAB’s Adams/Napolitano in straight sets to finish third in their pool.
Jerger/Putt will face off against Georgia State’s Creamer/Weiner in the first round of the women’s playoff bracket Friday at 1:00 pm EST.
In the men’s competition, Jon Justice and Adam Wienckowski represented the Seminoles in Pool B. The pair earned a straight-set win in the first round against Concordia’s Barsemian/Gibb, but fell to Hawaii’s Rosenmeier/Cowell to take second place in the bracket.
Justice/Wienckowski earn a fourth seed in the men’s playoff bracket, and will face UC Irvine’s Friedman/Chakravorti Friday at 6:00 pm EST.
The dual-gendered pairs event returns with a 32-team women’s bracket and eight-team men’s competition. The action begins on Thursday morning with pool play and continues on Friday with the men’s semifinals. The women’s semifinals and medal matches will be Saturday. The finals will be televised on NBCSN from 4-6 p.m. ET on May 12.
The Bridgestone USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships is part of the 2018 Team USA Summer Champions Series, presented by Xfinity. The Champions Series showcases numerous Olympic sports throughout the season, highlighting the year-round quest of Team USA athletes to compete at the Olympic Games.
