TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – When the season started on the west coast back in mid-August, no one could have envisioned a rematch between Florida State and Portland this early in the NCAA Tournament. But that is exactly what awaits for both the Seminoles and the Pilots when they take the field for a second round match-up on Friday, November 18 inside the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn., at 5:00 p.m. CT.
Florida State, unbeaten in its last seven games (6-0-1), is coming off a 2-0 victory over Samford in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last Friday. Portland and Oregon State played to a 1-1 tie in Corvallis before the Pilots prevailed in penalty kicks, 7-6.
FSU and Portland will square-off for the fifth time Friday evening, the second time this year and the first time in the NCAA Tournament. The Pilots have won the last two meetings including the early season battle in Portland back on August 21. UP defeated FSU 2-1 as all three goals were scored in the first half. Portland’s Danielle Foxhoven accounted for both Pilot goals including the game-winner on a penalty kick with 44 seconds left in the first half. Tiffany McCarty scored the lone goal for FSU as the Seminoles outshot Portland 22-11 in the loss.
Friday’s second round match also pits two of the nation’s most successful NCAA Tournament teams in terms of all-time winning percentage. The Pilots and Seminoles enter the match with the fourth and fifth highest postseason winning percentages at .750 and .744, respectively. FSU and Portland are two of only five schools with an all-time postseason winning percentage of .700 or higher.
The Seminoles are 9-9-2 away from home in the NCAA Tournament. Friday’s match marks the second time in the last four years that FSU has played a second round match on the road. The Seminoles went to Auburn for the first and second rounds in 2008 and defeated Mississippi Valley State (7-0) and Auburn (1-0). Florida State is 3-1 all-time on the road in NCAA Tournament Second Round match-ups.
In terms of playing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Florida State is 9-1-0 all-time. The Seminoles have won eight straight in the second round with their last and only loss coming at the hands of Clemson in 2001. Following its 2-0 win over Samford last Friday, Florida State remained unbeaten all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament improving to 11-0-1. FSU is a combined 18-1-1 all-time in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
Memphis and Louisville will play in the other second round match on Friday with the winners of both matches facing off in the NCAA Tournament Third Round on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. CT.
